Secondary School Education IN KENYA
Kenya does not have a public education system for secondary schooling; however, the Kenyan government works with private boarding schools to provide its citizens a secondary education. Once a student is admitted to a private secondary school, they must pay the annual tuition and uniform fees which ranges from $375 - $600 per year depending on the school. Unfortunately, the Kenyan government does not provide a scholarship program for families who cannot pay these expenses.
Admittance to a Secondary School
To be admitted into a secondary school, a student is required to pass their 8th grade exam which is given each November. Then the Kenyan government scores the exams and decides which school a student may attend. Families receive a letter in December letting them know where their child should report to school the next month in January. Students who do not earn passing grades may attend a trade school at their own expense to further their education.
Kenyan School Levels
National School: This level is for students with the highest 8th grade exam scores. These schools are not co-educational; they are separated into boys and girls schools.
Provisional School: This level is for students with average 8th grade exam scores. Like National Schools, these schools are separated between boys and girls.
Divisional School: This level is for students who passed the 8th grade exam with low scores. These schools are called “mixed” because they are co-educational admitting both boys and girls.
